After completing her undergraduate degree in Occupational Therapy from Dalhousie University (1989) Nancy worked for several years in Canada both in hospital and early childhood settings. Nancy then moved to Philadelphia, PA where she developed a community based, private practice while completing her post-professional MScOT (1998) specializing in pediatrics, augmentative and alternative communication, and disability rights. Throughout these years Nancy developed an enduring love of learning and research. This passion prompted Nancy to complete an Interdisciplinary PhD focused on Disability Studies at Dalhousie University in 2010 where Nancy engaged with teens who navigated stigma to create lasting friendships. This attention to sustainable relationships at home, at work and in the community is embedded in Nancy’s current work, funded by a Marie Curie Career Integration Grant. From 2012-2014 Nancy is completing a series of international case studies (Ireland, Canada, UK) attending to the relationships that enable people with intellectual disabilities to move from institutions to live well in their chosen communities. In addition to her programme of research and teaching in Clinical Therapies, Nancy is the Chair of Intellectual Disability Studies at UL (IDS@UL), an interdisciplinary research group that includes people with disabilities, service providers, and families. Commitments that guide Nancy’s research and teaching include: equity, social justice,  and the rights of people with disabilities to live well across the life course.

Applied Research Together (ART): People with Intellectual Disabilities Shaping International Research Agendas.
Summary:  Studies aligned with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities draw together multiple perspectives including people with intellectual disabilities, families and friends, service providers, people in professional practice and academics. This presentation offers insights about this complex and enriching research process.
