Speech topic: Rationale for astronomy as a development tool 
Irishman George Miley is Professor of Astronomy at Leiden University in the Netherlands. He carries out research into distant radio galaxies and has co-authored more than 300 refereed papers. He was the initiator of the Low Frequency Array, a European radio telescope centered in the Netherlands now nearing completion.

As Vice President of the International Union, he was the architect of a decadal plan to use Astronomy for global development that is presently being implemented in partnership with South Africa. He is also founder and Coordinator of Universe Awareness, an activity being pursued in 40 countries, which uses astronomy to introduce very young disadvantaged children to science and broaden their perspective.

Miley was the recipient of the Shell Oeuvre Prize and a Dutch knighthood. He has recently been made an honorary Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society.
