Martijn Neef

Martijn Neef is a senior research scientist and innovation consultant at the Defence, Security and Safety section of the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research TNO in The Hague, The Netherlands. Martijn holds a M.Sc. in Cognitive Artificial Intelligence from Utrecht University, and has been active for the past thirteen years at the intersection of intelligent technology, human capabilities and organisational behavior in the civil and defense domains. In his work, Martijn emphasizes the importance of understanding complexity and self-organisation in human, technological and information networks, and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to tackling complex societal challenges.
He has been involved in many national and international innovation projects on decision making and information sharing in complex environments, such as crisis management, urban security and military command and control.
Martijn is currently the scientific coordinator of the EU FP7 project BESECURE (Best practice enhancers for Security in Urban Environments), a project on policy-making support and knowledge sharing for urban security challenges. He is also the initiator of the upcoming EU FP7 project COBACORE (Community-based Collaborative Recovery) which will explore a community-building and comprehensive information-sharing environment for urban disaster recovery.
