HE Minister Prof. Dr. Ir. H. Gusti Muhammad Hatta, MSi is the Indonesian Minister for Research and Technology and a Professor in the University of Lambung Mangkurat (UNLAM), Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan Province. In 1979, he was graduated as a bachelor with the engineering degree (Ir) from the Faculty of Forestry of Lambung Mangkurat University, which was in affiliation with Bogor Agricultural University (IPB).  In 1987, he obtained his Magister Science (MSi) in Forestry Science, with the specific major in Silviculture from the University of Gadjah Mada (UGM) Yogjakarta.  In 1999, he was graduated from the University of Wageningen – the Netherlands, as a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Silviculture.

Prof. Dr. Ir. H. Gusti Muhammad Hatta, MSi spent most of his time in conducting Silviculture research (1981-1982) in UNLAM. He started his sparkling careers in UNLAM by holding various positions.  Within the period of 1983-2009, he held positions in sequence as (i) the Vice Dean I of the Faculty of Forestry; (ii) Vice Chairman of the Centre for Environmental Study; (iii) Chairman of the Post Graduate Study; (iv) Chairman of Research and Development Centre; (v) Vice Rector of Academic. 

In November 2009, Prof. Dr. Ir. H. Gusti Muhammad Hatta, MSi was appointed by the President of Republic Indonesia to become the Indonesian Minister for Environment.  In October 2011, he was assigned as the Indonesian Minister for Research and Technology (RISTEK) until now.  Within almost one and half year of his leadership in RISTEK (October 2011 – March 2013), he already has showed great efforts in various aspects to improve the science, technology and innovation (STI) environment in Indonesia. Moreover, he also has been actively participating in International scientific events, as well as hosting several International programs in Indonesia.  Indeed, as he experienced working with the foreign partners; he also supports the International cooperation, which is aimed to benefit the global society based on common interests and equalities, as well as to maintain the world sustainable development.
