Gareth Lawrence

RHEA System

Dr Lawrence studied Applied Mathematics as an undergraduate, and Space Plasma Physics for his Ph.D. He has in excess of fifteen years of applied experience in Space Weather science, with his doctoral thesis written on the subject.  He has previously worked at the NASA Goddard Spaceflight Centre and the Royal Observatory of Belgium, undertaking basic research on the physics behind Space Weather events and analysing the effects of such events on satellite operations.  Dr Lawrence has been an employee of RHEA System SA since early 2009, and leads RHEA's activities in the Space Weather domain.

Within the frame of the ESA SSA programme he successfully led the specific Task of the Space Weather Precursor Services project, which resulted in the writing of the Service Requirements and Strategic Roadmap documents for the SWE Segment. These Roadmaps are a key initial step towards ESA's provision of a system of 37 User-Oriented services within the SWE domain. Additionally Dr Lawrence is RHEA project manager for various projects in other segments of the SSA programme.
