Dr. Nick Fowler

Managing Director, Academic and Government Institutions, Elsevier

Dr Nick Fowler is Managing Director of Elsevier’s Academic and Government Institutions group which provides data and analytics tools that help universities, funding bodies and governments manage their research activities.  He leads Elsevier’s Global Academic Relations group in which he collaborates with senior leaders of the world’s leading universities and research policy-makers globally.

Dr Fowler is an expert on Science and Medical Research information. He led the team that delivered the recent report to the UK Government’s Department of Business Innovation and Skills (BIS): The International Comparative Performance of the UK Research Base – 2011. He has directed Reed Elsevier’s formal responses to government and industry consultations on Science and Medical publishing, including to the UK Government, the US Government, and the European Commission. 

Dr Fowler currently serves as Vice President of the Publishers’ Association in the UK and will become its President in May 2013.

Dr Fowler joined Elsevier in 2003 and was its Director of Strategy from 2005-2012. Before that he was at the strategy management consultancy McKinsey & Company where he worked with leading global companies in high technology and media sectors. He has PhD in Anthropology from Cornell University in 1998, a Masters in the Social Sciences from the University of Chicago as a Fulbright Scholar in 1990, and a BA in Geography from Oxford University in 1989.
