Technology Project Manager, Medical Research Council’s Medical Device Innovation Platform

Giovanni Milandri is the Technology Project Manager for the Medical Research Council’s Medical Device Innovation Platform. He manages new medical devices in their technical, clinical, legal and business readiness towards being commercialized from SA research institutions, currently overseeing 15 projects.
Mr Milandri returned to South Africa from studying an MSc in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Oxford. He was a Skye Scholar, as well as recipient of the Sloane-Robinson Scholarship for this programme. His research was in non-linear characterization of turning gait. In addition, he holds an MSc in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Stellenbosch, where he researched modeling and control of the motions of catamarans.

Mr. Milandri’s experience in product development and management was gained during the development of the Joule Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV). One of his roles was managing supplier relations in the development costing of the overall vehicle in the company’s business plan.  During this time, he also designed and helped commercialise a retractor for Minimally Invasive Hip Replacement Surgery (MIS). His stake in the product was sold, valuing it at around $100k.
