Nollaig O’Fionghaile

Irish Research Council' New Foundations Awardee

Nollaig Ó Fiongháile is a musician, researcher and lecturer. Formerly founder, executive member and later President of the European Network of Traditional Music & Dance (1997-2005); Expert to the European Commission and Council of Europe for the campaign ‘Europe, A Common Heritage’ 2002; Culture Regeneration Specialist with the University of Ulster’ Northern Ireland Centre of European Cooperation (2003-06); Development Manager at the Graduate School of Creative Arts & Media (GradCAM) (2008-2012) where she established the research-performance team in traditional & improvised music (with doctoral stipends) and the EU policy network Creative Policies for the Creative City (Culture 2007-13). Currently she is working with the SMARTlab Digital Media Institute, UCD as Associate Director of R&D. 

In 2011, Nollaig was awarded the Fiosraigh Scholarship, Dean of Graduate Students Award from the Dublin Institute of Technology to complete her doctoral research; and in 2012 she was awarded the Irish Research Council’ New Foundations Award for her research project ‘SUNESIS’. Her research enquiry is entitled ‘melodic visions, dancing sounds & peripheral aesthetics;’ it seeks to critically examine creative practice in traditional music performance; and to investigate the processes and value systems supporting its expression.
