Helmut Brand is a Jean Monnet Professor of European Public Health and Head of the Department of International Health at Maastricht University.

He has developed a successful career combining competencies related to practice in the area of public health and management at the level of health authorities, ministries of health and as a director of the State Public Health Institute of North-Rhine Westphalia in Germany with a strong scientific experience in the area of comparative studies in public health and policy with a unique European perspective. Health and European Integration is the main topic of his work.

Professor Brand has publications in peer reviewed journals, books and reports. He has led many international multicenter research projects including EU Member and Non-members countries. Professor Brand has excellent communication and presentation skills which allow him to address different audiences and their needs. He is a member of various scientific and editorial boards and gives invited lectures and key-notes at important European events related to health. He collaborates closely with European institutions and the WHO.

He is a president of Association of Schools of Public Health in European region (ASPHER) and holds a title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Sophia. In 2012 Helmut Brand became president of the  European Health Forum Gastein, the most important conference on European Health Policy.
