Karna Bryan is the Programme Manager of the Maritime Security programme at the NATO Science and Technology Organization Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (STO CMRE). As part of this programme, she leads the Maritime Situational Awareness (MSA) project which builds on current collaborative data sharing efforts by providing interoperable technical solutions to enable nations, agencies, and organizations to more effectively work together in building knowledge from data. The technical aim of the project is to produce tools and algorithms which can be used to better understand multi-sensor data from a variety of data sources taking more tedious tasks away from humans, providing better information and decision aids to operators, and enabling more comprehensive awareness. Interoperability and scalability are a focus of the activities with the objective of providing a service-oriented approach that provides a foundation to quickly integrate systems across various collaborators. Karna is also is the CMRE point of contact for the European Commission FP7 project NEREIDS, “New Service Capabilities for Integrated and Advanced Maritime Surveillance,” which aims to increase the level of accuracy in detecting maritime targets using spaced-based observation. The CMRE Maritime Security Programme also investigates technologies and techniques for protecting ports and harbours via the development of models and analysis, demonstration and experimentation, and serious gaming inserting new technologies to understand their impact on operations.
